The Summer Company Program provides hands-on business training - together with financial support - to help enterprising young people start and run their own summer business.

This year we have 16 young entrepreneurs participating in Summer Company.

+ad hoc design

+ad hoc design is a summer company that designs and produces painted screens, adaptive reuse objects and one-of-a-kind art objects. The company is owned and operated by Emily Young, an architecture student from Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia. These objects are produced out of the owner's home studio and workshop, and sold through outdoor summer venues in the Ottawa region, as well as by custom order.

Briargreen Lawn Care

Sean Smith, a student at Sir Robert Borden High School, is the owner/operator of Briargreen Lawn Care. This landscaping business offers the residents of the Briargreen community a variety of lawn-related services, including lawn cutting, yard cleanup, aeration, weed and feed, grub control and shrub trimming.

Fine Touch Painting

Fine Touch Painting is owned and operated by Stéphane Boileau, a second year business administration student at La Cité Collégiale. His company provides clients with a bilingual service and a top quality workmanship for interior and exterior painting projects in the Ottawa area. Fine Touch Painting offers the convenience of working around the clients' schedule by providing evening and weekend services. Customer satisfaction is assured.

BondGraphics

Rick Bond is a 25 year-old Graphics Design student at Algonquin College. He founded BondGraphics in May 2005. BondGraphics serves the small to mid-sized business community in the Ottawa area and offers a multitude of services, including design for web and design for print. Rick specializes in 3D animated Flash design for websites.

Luna's Equine Designs

Luna's Equine Designs owner, Valerie Shaw, founded her business with the horse lover in mind. Along with commissioned animal portraits and stall signs, Valerie, a fine arts student at the University of Ottawa, makes unique jewelry that does not solely cater to equestrians, but to all fashion savvy individuals.

Pixel Canvas Media

Rostam Oancea is a third year university student and has been creating print media and websites for local organizations for over half a decade. His interest led him to the creation of Pixel Canvas Media, a local promotions company. Products range from simple brochure sites to powerful CMS (content management system) packages. Promotional services include corporate identity creation, event fliers and online advertising.

kcene motifs

kcene motifs creates hemp jewelry of a wide variety of styles, with beads of all shapes and sizes. Product offerings also include interesting silk-screen images created and transferred to wearables, including pillowcases and change purses. Karina Czyewski, sole proprietor and creator of all items, studies at the University of Alberta, but is a permanent resident of Ottawa.

Imaging Station

A student at Grenville Christian College, Alvin Ng is the owner/operator of the Imaging Station. Located in the heart of Ottawa's China Town, the Imaging Station provides specialized services in printing and laminating still photos on a variety of backgrounds. Unlike photo booths, the Imaging Station offers personalized customer service.

The ABCs of Do Re Mi

Founded by Amanda Chan, a 3rd year student at the Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College, ABCs of Do Re MI offers a different take on piano lessons. The company offers an initial consultation and 3 introductory keyboard lessons to clients in the comfort of their home. The instructor will provide a keyboard during each of the 3 half hour lessons and have an advisory meeting with the client (parent or guardian) on how to choose an appropriate piano teacher and how to purchase a keyboard or piano.

Demeter

Demeter manufactures the highest-quality luxury belts made from the best leathers and most aesthetic and durable buckles. Owner Dimitri Onistsuk, a business student at the University of Ottawa and the maker of Demeter belts, believes that to make something truly great, the maker has to infuse whatever he is doing with a dedication and love of the art. For Dimtri, the bottom line is to become the absolute best maker of belts in the entire world .

Jump for Joy

Alex Naish is entering his third year in the Commerce Program at McMaster University in Hamilton, and was eager to gain some real world business experience through the Summer Company Program. In mid-May he started operating his summer company, Jump for Joy, which operates an inflatable bounce house. Included in the cost of rental are the delivery, setup, and takedown of bounce house, as well as constant supervision. Jump for Joy is currently targeting sports tournaments, festivals and parties with its marketing. The company's goal is to provide a cost-effective alternative for entertainment at events, while keeping children active and engaged.

Onin design

Onin design specializes in custom fabricated contemporary home furnishings. Owner Christopher Ledda uses local suppliers, and draws on the knowledge and skill he has acquired while studying at Carleton University's School of Industrial Design. His goal is to provide his clients with one of a kind custom creations that reflect their lifestyle, personality and good taste.

Tension Media was founded by Rinda Pen, a student at Canterbury Secondary School. The company's goal is to save its customers time and money. Services include mass media distribution, desktop publishing and digital photography.

EZ Play Guitar School

The EZ Play Guitar School aims to provide quality guitar instruction using the EZ Play Method, developed by founder Hunter Fox, an Ottawa area secondary school student. The school seeks to provide the beginner guitar player with an easy to follow and understandable way to learn guitar. Students should be playing the guitar at an intermediate level within twelve weeks.

Community Mentoring Group

Our goal is to help young entrepreneurs gain insight into business creation and risk-taking, practical experience in marketing, financial management, sales and customer service, and attitudes and skills essential for personal success, whatever their chosen career. The success of Summer Company is due to our Community Mentoring Group. The Community Mentoring Group is the heart of Summer Company, and every year, our mentors provide invaluable guidance to our participants.
